Moving your pet bird to Hawaii can seem a bit daunting, and the process is well-controlled with special permits required, species checks, and 7 days of quarantine that is mandatory before arrival to Hawaii.
All birds moving to Hawaii are required to come to Honolulu first, at this time, it is not possible for birds to have direct release to neighbor islands.
Hawaii does not have a bird quarantine facility so it is crucial that the proper rules are followed or your bird will be sent back immediately upon arrival, and the state of Hawaii can issue large fines to the shipper for improper bird shipments.
We will work with your local veterinarian on the mainland to be sure they are indeed an accredited vet per Hawaii’s strict requirements, and help them to obtain the necessary permit that is required to be filed by the veterinarian themselves. The second permit, we apply for here on island.
There are several species of birds that are not allowed into the state of Hawaii – regardless of if they may already be found in the state.
Hawaii also requires a strict timeline of when birds leave the isolation quarantine period at your vet clinic and the arrival to Honolulu. When we book your flights, we also go over these timelines with your vet to ensure we meet this 36 hours window. When coming from the East coast this is especially important to pay attention to.
Upon arrival to Honolulu – we will pick up your bird and deliver to your home here on Oahu – or transfer to the next available neighbor island flight.
If you live in a remote area, or a smaller town, you may find that you do not have a local vet that is an approved USDA accredited Avian vet, or your vet may not offer isolation services, or they may charge very high fees or additional testing that is not required to come to Hawaii which impacts your overall cost. We have a vet at our ranch in Oregon who meets these requirements, is able to do the isolation, and final health certificate, and the cost is very reasonable including the cost to ship the bird to our vet in Oregon.
